Looks like they gave out the awards at a luncheon. It doesn't sound as if they're going to have a televised event. They don't have a contest in which one film wins over the others. It is a list of the "top ten" of 2004 so all films are honored. Here's what I found on the AFI site
AFI Awards 2004 Official Selections LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12, 2004 - The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the official selections of AFI AWARDS 2004, AFI's almanac which records the year's most outstanding achievements in film and television, as well as significant moments in the world of the moving image. AFI AWARDS 2004 is the only form of national recognition that honors the film and television creative ensemble as a whole -- those people in front of and behind the camera -- acknowledging the collaborative nature of film and television. Unlike any other film or television award currently given, the AFI AWARDS 2004 selections were made through AFI's unique 13-person jury process in which scholars, artists, critics and AFI trustees discuss, debate and determine the most outstanding achievements of the year, as well as provide a detailed rationale for each selection. Two AFI juries -- one for motion pictures and one for television -- convened in Los Angeles for two days of deliberation. The jurors have remained confidential until the announcement was made on December 12th. AFI will honor the creative ensembles for each of the honorees at a luncheon sponsored by Ellen Tracy on Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The jury rationales for each selection will be revealed at this event. "AFI is proud to honor these 20 collaborative teams that have made 2004 such a remarkable year in film and television. As the institute recognizes and celebrates excellence across the century, these honorees will be part of the record that documents America's enduring cultural legacy," commented Jean Picker Firstenberg, AFI's Director and CEO. AFI MOVIES OF THE YEAR - OFFICIAL SELECTIONS "THE AVIATOR" "COLLATERAL" "Eternal Sunshine OF THE SPOTLESS MIND" "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS" "THE INCREDIBLES" "KINSEY" "MARIA FULL OF GRACE" "MILLION DOLLAR BABY" "SIDEWAYS" "SPIDER-MAN 2" AFI TV PROGRAMS OF THE YEAR - OFFICIAL SELECTIONS "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT" "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM" "DEADWOOD" "DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES" "LOST" "NIP/TUCK" "THE SHIELD" "SOMETHING THE LORD MADE" "THE SOPRANOS" "SOUTH PARK" PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE
According to this link Jim will get his award on Feb 12th. But it doesn't say if it is going to be televised or not.http://guide.hbocomedyfestival.com/2005/progguide/title-schedule.php I will be so upset if they put this on TV and I miss it. I thought this was going to be like last year when Meryl Streep got her AFI award.

i dont think the afi awards are televised because i cant recall ever seeing an award show by them ever on tv but maybe i just miss it every time... but i think if the awards were on tv then you would be able to find it on some tv listing
HBO might show some of the ceremony, since they are the main sponsor of the festival. I think I remember them showing part of the festival on TV before.
If the ceremony is this Saturday, I guess we know not to look for him at the BAFTA ceremony -- that's also this Saturday.
I think you are right Favabeans. Thanks for clearing that up for me
Usually HBO Comedy airs a "best of" as a one hour documentary from each year's Festival, they may show a clip from the Carrey/Conan thing. They haven't put it on their schedule yet so I'm not sure when it will air. Obviously they wait until after the festval is over so they can sell more tickets to the actual event. HBO Comedy is a seperate channel from the original HBO channel.
I was supposed to volunteer for this event but I ended up not being able to go as I have some family drama that needed attending to. My friend is in charge of volunteers for the Conan event so damn I would have been right in the thick of it! **sigh** If she can send me photos I promise I will share. ![]()
