Many Robotniks On Set

If you think filming a movie is easy, we’re here to tell you right now: you’re wrong. Managing multiple departments and people is no easy task, but it’s necessary. Because of this, we get to see amazing stories come to life.
But when you have two characters played by the same actor, it becomes a logistical challenge that takes time.
A great example of this is Sonic 3. Jim Carrey plays two characters in the movie, and to make that work, they needed multiple stand-ins to play the characters as well, so Jim would have someone to interact with. This was especially important because he had to be in makeup for three hours for each character and couldn’t portray both characters on the same day.
“In a behind-the-scenes video for the digital release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, actor James Marsden revealed there were six or seven stand-ins for Ivo and Gerald Robotnik who looked just like Jim Carrey.”
According to Jeff Fowler:
“(...) they had to film scenes which featured both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik across multiple days so they could get the proper shots of Carrey as the two separate characters.”
We’d say it was worth it! Sonic 3 was a huge success at the box office, and even though it was difficult to shoot, it was all worth it to see the audience’s positive response.
