Just don't call Him. Not if you're using the new Jim Carrey flick as your phone book. Seems a number displayed on the cell phone of Carrey's character in the would-be divine comedy Bruce Almighty has inspired devilish pranksters and possibly some true believers to punch up the seven digits for themselves. But instead of reaching God, or even Carrey, callers are reaching the likes of a Florida artist, a Colorado radio network and a South Carolina woman who has been "getting aggravated to death," according to a story in Tuesday's St. Petersburg Times. "What am I to do?," Dawn Jenkins, the Sunshine State artist wrote on a Web forum, reports the Florida-based Times. "I may have to change my phone number." In her post, Jenkins said she'd been getting up to 15-20 "Is God there?" calls an hour. Ron Nickell of the Radio Colorado Network in Longmont, Colorado, told the newspaper his station received 30-40 calls last weekend. Though Nickell's network and Jenkins' residence are in different states, they share the same seven-digit phone number. Only the area code is different. The same goes for the home line of the unidentified, but agitated South Carolina woman. That woman told the Times she didn't know why she'd been getting so many calls requesting God's presence until the paper contacted her. Nickell said the calls his station logged were from jokesters, one who sought to challenge Him: "Since you're God, if you can name all 31 flavors of Haagen-Dazs ice cream, I'll give you $31,000." As if God needed $31,000, pursued trivia, or was under the false impression, as the Times pointed out, that Haagen-Dazs, not Baskin- Robbins, was in the 31-flavors business. Bruce Almighty, which opened Friday, was the Memorial Day weekend's No. 1 movie, winning converts with a righteous $85.7 million. To help clarify matters, Universal Pictures on Tuesday said that its hit movie, about a washed-up Buffalo, New York, weatherman (Carrey) who gets a call from the Big Guy (Morgan Freeman), was a "fictional comedy." "A phone number depicted in the film (which does not contain an area code) was specifically chosen because it does not exist in the Buffalo area," the studio said in a statement. As God's hastily drafted personal assistants can tell Universal, the number does, however, exist outside the Buffalo area. In her Web post, Jenkins, who saw her phone number on the big screen while attending a Bruce Almighty screening on Friday, said, "I emailed Universal Studios about this issue...I think I want payment." Later, she declined to speak with the St. Petersburg Times, saying she wanted to check with a lawyer first, the paper reported. In the event Bruce Almighty spawns a sequel, Universal may be wise to assign Him a bogus 555 prefix, & la 555-HAIR (for a wig shop) from GoodFellas, or 555-0100 (an escort service) from Memento. I guess you have to be one of the people getting the calls all hours of the day and night. I happen to be one of them and I have been getting calls since Friday night and they lasted until 2:30 in the morning on Sunday night. Maybe those that think it is stupid to be upset should come over and answer my phone all night so that me and my children can sleep. The most amazing part is the amount of people that are ignorant enough to call the number again & again. I know this because I have caller ID. I have also been paying for 3 years to have an unlisted number. Should they have to reimburse me all my wasted money. I'm so sorry lydia66 that must be terrible for you, your not the only one though I just watched my local news here in St. Louis and someone here has the same number. My opinion is you half to be a real moron and have nothing better to do to call a number you see in a movie. I just finished reading your discussion board on "God's" phone numer and my brother's phone number is also the same. We, however have had only 6 calls. Half of them have been from radio stations, one from New York, one from Texas and we don't know were the last one is from but apparently they have a "bone to pick with god". All but one call has been between 7 and 9 in the morning so it hasn't inconvenienced us in any way. We find the whole thing really funny but if the number of Crack Pots calling increases that could definately change.
